Concerto for Saxophone and Wind Ensemble reflects the two musical roots of the composer—the saxophone and the wind ensemble.

The saxophone serves a dual role: performing both clear, lyrical melodies and gestural figures—sonic trajectories that paint a soundscape. A central feature of the work is the free use of the Twelve-Tone System (in a style reminiscent of Alban Berg), combined with tone centers, producing a texture that feels both familiar and intriguingly unfamiliar.

The piece is structured in several contrasting sections, such as a mysterious Misterioso and a dance-like Scherzo. The wind ensemble functions both as a dialogue and as a supportive accompaniment for the solo saxophone, which alternates between melody and gesture. Together, these elements create a musical reflection of the composer’s own journey, which began with this very instrument and ensemble type.

The concerto received its premiere performance by members of the Mahidol Wind Orchestra, conducted by Yossaral Songkiatikul, with saxophone soloist Dr. Wisuwat Pruksavanich, who brought the energy, and narrative of the piece vividly to life on stage.

The work was composed in late 2016 and presented in early 2017 as part of Viskamol Chaiwanichsiri’s undergraduate senior recital in composition.
